THIS WEEK (AND BEYOND) AT ST. DAVID’S
November 9 – 15, 2008

RECTOR’S MUSINGS:  Post Election

Regardless of how we voted on Tuesday, if we, as the people of St. David’s believe in our core value of hospitality that says “all are welcome all the time” then we cannot help but be proud and rejoice in the historic reality of this vote by which our country elected its first African – American president.  We have come a long way.

However, let us be careful.  So much of what I am hearing as post election analysis conjures up a false hope based on an all too familiar mantra that pines away on the familiar chant of “anyone can achieve whatever anyone wants in this country.”

Oh, really?  I don’t believe it.  I don’t believe it’s ever been true.  Amidst the political rhetoric of saving the middle class not once did I hear one word about saving the poor.  How can anyone who struggles to find enough food, shelter and clothing aspire to being successful whatever that means.  It’s hard to dream the so-called “American dream” when life is full of the nightmares of trying to simply stay alive.  Based on the current financial crisis, one would think that this dream was more about saving one’s retirement account.  Unfortunately, it’s easy to play the victim no matter if we are rich or poor.

Our ministry of hospitality continues.  “All are welcome all the time” is a daunting task.  It does mean sharing the wealth which is not about socialism but the Gospel of Jesus Christ.  When we achieve this then even these historic days will pale in the light of it.

Joining you in building bridges of hope with the living Christ,

David+
