At St. David's
we are involved in many acts of reaching out; clearly extending
services/activities beyond the “usual” limit. Examples abound. We rent
space to community groups and another religious organization at below-market
rates; we provide meals to groups that are in need; we provide clothing and
sundry items for those in need; we provide food coupons to those in need; we
bring religious services to the shut-ins; we help provide needed gifts to
local and international communities in need; we provide support services to
families at risk.
That’s a lot
of giving, a lot of providing, a lot of “reaching out” or “extending” as old
man Webster would say. But is it all a one-way street? No, in reality, we
receive far more by giving. Webster may have his definition but St. David’s
view is that we “get when we give”, we share our time, our talent and our
treasure to the less fortunate and in return we receive a satisfaction in
knowing that others are better off for our activities.
If you have
ever served a meal at the St. Paul’s Shelter for the homeless or at the St.
Anthony’s Homeless Shelter or provided a religious service for the aged
shut-ins or assisted the developmentally disabled crew at Willing Hands you
understand the “getting” aspect of Outreach.
